Builder’s Homes Rely on Structural Insulated Panels from Premier Building Systems

Olympia, Wash., February 19, 2009 – The NAHB Research Center, a subsidiary of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), has selected Scott Homes, Olympia, Washington, as the 2009 EnergyValue Housing Awards (EVHA) Builder of the Year. The EVHA, presented in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), are the nation’s preeminent energy efficiency awards honoring builders who voluntarily incorporate energy efficiency into all aspects of new home construction. Scott Homes also received an EVHA Gold Award for custom homes built in cold climates.

The award judges describe Scott Homes as “doing it all very well, but constantly looking for ways to improve. They truly understand the value of building green.”

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are prefabricated insulated components used to build floors, walls, and ceilings in homes and light commercial buildings. They consist of two outer skins of oriented strand board (OSB) and an inner core of super-insulating expanded polystyrene laminated together to form a monolithic building panel with high-energy efficiency. They replace conventional stud or "stick frame" construction and need no additional insulation or skeleton for support.

In independent tests, the Washington State University Cooperative Extension Energy Program found that Scott Homes built with Premier SIPs, low-e double-pane glazing and radiant floor heating are predicted to save homeowners up to 60% per year on energy usage compared to a typical home. Most SIPs-built homes also qualify for a $2,000 federal tax credit.
